Stephen Bron. Overnight Garden

19th Aug – 10th Sep 2022

I don’t attempt to make linear connections between paintings. These works start out autobiographical, but are then untethered from their original context. For me, the real story is in the gaps between the works and where they lead.

The artist is particularly fascinated by the possibility of painting to contextualize itself with its surroundings. Thus, in his paintings, figures merge with landscapes, a pile of half-eaten strawberries alludes to a conversation and the passing of time in it, or a snake wraps itself around a person's hand.

It is often the most uncomplicated scenes and everyday experiences that make the strongest motifs for Bron. The subjects are intended to be simple and accessible on the one hand, and open, poetic and ephemeral on the other.

Overnight Garden presents a series of paintings that were all created in the course of the last 12 months in the artist's New York studio. As the title of the exhibition suggests, some of the paintings are impressions of nature, others show moments from the artist's immediate surroundings. Stephen Bron himself says that the creation of the paintings is comparable to the planting of a garden, in which painting after painting grows and new experiences are added continuously. Just as a gardener is rewarded both physically and mentally for his hard work with the yields of his garden, Stephen Bron sees the work on the paintings rewarded with moments of joy and enchantment.

It is often the most uncomplicated scenes and everyday experiences that make the strongest motifs for Bron. The subjects are intended to be simple and accessible on the one hand, and open, poetic and ephemeral on the other. The artist is particularly fascinated by the possibility of painting to contextualize itself with its surroundings. Thus, in his paintings, figures merge with landscapes, a pile of half-eaten strawberries alludes to a conversation and the passing of time in it, or a snake wraps itself around a person's hand.

Music Mirror shows Bron's partner holding a white T-shirt in his hand. It is particularly the light shining through the white fabric that constitutes the real magic of the moment for the artist.

Despite the often seemingly coincidental sections of the picture, the artist thinks a lot about which details and sections he depicts in his works and which he leaves out. The paintings are meant to capture the viewer's attention at first glance, but the complexity and nuances only reveal themselves after a longer look.

With particular attention to the use of color, Bron's paintings offer the viewer a multi-layered experience. Moving between abstraction and figuration, the paintings invite the viewer to connect with the artist and his interest in memory, imagination and narrative.
