We are delighted to show new paintings by Ruprecht von Kaufmann at Reinsburgstraße 68A, from September 22 to November 4, 2023. As has been Ruprecht’s practice for a number of years, he uses colored linoleum instead of canvas as a painting surface for oils, which he modifies in some of his pieces with cuts and collages.

The title "Hundert" refers to Otto Dix’s work, which captured big-city life in Berlin during the Weimar Republic of the 1920s. Dix focused especially on his bustling city, caught between the golden twenties and the aftermath of World War I, in which poverty, excess and political transformation walked hand-in-hand. The air was humming with excited celebration, despite the fragile social and political situation; yet, social grievances were left ignored. These were the basic themes of Dix's work. A century later, Ruprecht von Kaufmann confronts similar themes in the contemporary context. His works are a testimony to our present-day society, which again is in a state of constant volatility and flux, characterized by contradiction and paradox.

Influenced in particular by the strong individualism of our time, Ruprecht von Kaufmann focuses on the individual human being amongst the mass. Although we are constantly and everywhere surrounded by other people, by distractions and entertainment opportunities, everyday life is often characterized by solitude and loneliness. Repeatedly, the people in Ruprecht von Kaufmann's paintings are isolated from each other and preoccupied with themselves, even when they are presented in groups. Ruprecht von Kaufmann's subjects are at once archetypes of our society and complex individuals who leave questions open about their origins, experiences, and emotions.

Thus, "Nightclubbing" takes up the theme of excess. Three young people sit on a sofa, apparently in a nightclub. A fourth person in the foreground can only be seen in part, perhaps just leaving the scene. On a low table in front of the sofa are the remains of the party: empty glasses and bottles. Even though they are sitting at the table together, they don't seem to be sharing the moment, since each of them is preoccupied with him or herself, apparently trapped in their own reality.

There is often an implied temporal sequence in Von Kaufmanns paintings; that which is not shown, but only hinted at, is as important as the depicted. In "Ringbahn" we see a passing train, in which there are three people, separated and seemingly ignoring each other, rumbling through the dark, each lost in their own thoughts. The reflections and mirrorings in windowpanes of other trains may give viewers the sense of catching the scene themselves out of the corner of their eye as they pass by. Apparently it is late evening or early morning, because the passengers are tired and exhausted, blinded by the yellowish harsh light inside the train. We are left to wonder where they are going and where they are coming from: from work, perhaps? A celebration? Is the soldier on his way back to the barracks?
