Rudy Cremonini. New Works

August 6th - September 4th

In this exhibition, the Bologna-born artist takes us on a summer vacation. Exotic birds, holiday resorts, and idyllic landscapes meet the artist’s poetic pictorial language. With his fluid and prominent brushstroke, he plays with the fine line between figuration and abstraction. Leisure and freedom are the overall themes in the works of the exhibition. The oil paintings take up the idea of a limited living space where freedom is restricted. They set themselves apart from the monotony of everyday life and appeal to the longing for recreation and diversion.

In "A Little Company," for example, the viewer looks at a pool with several sunbeds. While two figures shower in the back, the figure in front dangles their legs in the water. The pool area is closed off from the outside world by a wall so that the events inside remain unobserved and the figures can move freely. The palm trees, which are behind the wall, accentuate the border between outside and inside. This creates an intimate and erotic atmosphere between the figures.

In "An Answer," the paint almost seems to run off the canvas, contrasting the bright yellow bird that stretches its head upward. Invisible forces seem to be pulling on the bird, which opposes the downward traction, building an alluring tension.

In "Dinner Club," recreational activities, such as here drinking a martini, speak to the viewer's desire for a moment of relaxation. Switching off, enjoying life, or as one would say in Italy, "la dolce vita," determine these motifs in the works. Nevertheless, there is an underlying melancholy that makes us aware that this is merely a temporary state.

In "Dangerous Hope", the artist plays with the contrast between security and insecurity. The impressive mansion which serves as a place of refuge, is partly covered by a thick forest so that the viewer does not know what to expect there.

From Aug 6 to Sep 4, 2021, we are showing Italian artist Rudy Cremonini ( *1981 ) for the fifth time in a solo exhibition.

The pool area is closed off from the outside world by a wall so that the events in- side remain unobserved and the figures can move freely. The palm trees, which are behind the wall, accentuate the border between outside and inside. This creates an intimate and erotic atmosphere between the figures. In comparison, figures in the work "Limbo" are surrounded by wild nature with a pastel pink river flowing through them. Similar to "A Little Company", the characters here are protected from the outside world by the dense forest. Here, civilization meets wild nature. The mundane is excluded from both works. The figures find themselves in a bubble that promises freedom and self-determination and is reminiscent of depictions of "paradise gar- dens" and "pleasure gardens". However, this is only temporary, since everyday life lurks behind the forest and behind the wall.

A man in sunglasses and a straw hat looks out of the painting in "Happy Guy". He casually puffs on his cigarette while tropical plants are reflected in his glasses. Happiness is associated here with breaking free from everyday life and the absence of responsibility. Likewise, in "Dinner Club," recreational activities, such as here drinking a martini, speak to the viewer's desire for a moment of relaxation. Switching off, enjoying life, or as one would say in Italy, "la dolce vita," determine these motifs in the works. Nevertheless, there is an underlying melancholy that makes us aware that this is merely a temporary state.

Reds and pinks blend with cool grays in "Last Night." The round and seemingly quick brushstrokes create a textured surface that sets the sitting bird apart from the background. In "An Answer," the paint almost seems to run off the canvas, contrasting the bright yellow bird that stretches its head upward. Invisible forces seem to be pulling on the bird, which opposes the downward traction, building an alluring tension.
