From 24th March to 29th April 2023 we present new works by Martin-Jan van Santen at Reinsburgstraße 68A. The works in the exhibition "Unbeschwert" show the Dutch artist's search for the beauty of the male body, for the undisguised truth behind the pose. A play with light and shadow emphasizes the contours of the bodies and creates scenes that are often characterized by lightness.

The works in the exhibition "Unbeschwert" show the Dutch artist's search for the beauty of the male body, for the undisguised truth behind the pose. A play of light and shadow emphasizes the contours of the bodies and creates scenes that are often characterized by lightness.

Martin-Jan van Santen illuminates the bodies in his paintings from different angles. Some of the people shown remain anonymous. He often focuses attention on details.

"I show details because they fascinate me. Sometimes the light, sometimes the shapes. I like it when the viewers do at first glance not know what they are looking at."
– Martin-Jan van Santen –

Some of the figures are caught in mid-motion, like a still image. The resulting gaps must be filled by the imagination: What was before? Other figures seem to pause and are shown in a moment of stillness.

Depth and physicality are created in particular through a play of light and shadow. At times, van Santen makes use of surprising coloration, which colors sunbeams green and gives shadows a violet glow.

Water as a motif recurs in several works in the exhibition. Sometimes van Santen's figures emerge from a dark water surface on which reflections of light shine, sometimes their contours stand out clearly beneath the smooth surface of a bath water, and others stir up the turquoise water of a pool. It is these variations of states, the constant change, that attract Martin-Jan van Santen to water.

"Water is fascinating to me, because it has no real form. It's constantly changing and I try to capture that movement in my works."
– Martin-Jan van Santen –

In his paintings, Van Santen sometimes shows scenes that could arise from reality and which we are allowed to witness completely unobserved. In other, but no less authentic scenes, the viewer is involved through a direct gaze. We witness moments of lightness, reminiscent of warm summer days and radiating lightheartedness.

Martin-Jan van Santen was born 1968 in Oudehaske, NL. He graduated from the Academy of Arts, Constantijn Huygens in Kampen, NL. He lives in Nagele, NL and works in Kampen, NL.
