“Somewhere there’s music

How faint the tune

Somewhere there’s heaven

How high the moon”

– Mary Hamilton –

Nothing is harder to paint than dumb hope. It’s too embarrassing (the things I wished for that didn’t happen, the things I wish for now that seem increasingly unlikely) and too fleeting (even as I write these words, it slips out of my grasp.) Yet, if I had truly lost hope, I wouldn’t be painting at all.

The figures in my recent paintings are vulnerable and frightened, but also caught in the wonder of it all. They are bitten by snakes and tangled in the blackberry vines. These are people who live close to nature and the irrational. Children stare wide-eyed at tadpoles and butterflies. A beekeeper inspects her hive.

My inspiration comes from poetry and mythology (I’ve been reading Virgil and Sylvia Plath) but, also from things closer to home. “Boy with a Black-Eye and His Barbary Dove” is really about my son whose pet dove that was unremittingly stalked, and eventually eaten, by our cat. Cottonmouth is a reference to the poisonous water snakes that live in the lakes and rivers of the south-eastern United States where I grew up.

After two years of social isolating with my family and pets, I offer paintings that are neither dark and brooding nor proud and optimistic. Instead, I present these works which look for the beauty in awkwardness and the strength in vulnerability.
